Pool Closing Chemicals: What Matters Before Winter


Closing chemicals do a different job than the ones you use all summer. In season, you are keeping water safe to swim in today. At closing, you are trying to leave water stable and non-destructive for five months with no circulation, no filtration, and nobody testing it. Those are not the same problem, and the products that solve them are not the same either.

Balance First, Winterize Second
This ordering is the part people skip, and it is the part that matters most. Balancing happens about a week before closing. Winterizing chemicals go in on closing day, after the water level is set and the lines are cleared.
The reason is simple: winterizing products are designed to sit in stable water. If you dump them into water that is out of balance, you spend their effectiveness fighting the imbalance instead of protecting the pool. One adjustment worth understanding: at closing you want alkalinity toward the upper end of its normal range rather than the middle. Alkalinity is the buffer that keeps pH from drifting, and nobody is going to correct pH drift in January. A little extra buffer is what stops five months of slow movement from etching plaster or scaling a heat exchanger.
What Actually Goes In
Winter algaecide
The core product. A long-acting algaecide is formulated to stay effective for months rather than days, which is what a closed pool needs. Regular in-season algaecide is not a substitute — it is designed for a circulating, filtered pool and does not have the staying power.
One caution: many algaecides are copper-based, and copper can stain some surfaces. If you have a light-colored plaster or a newly resurfaced pool, that is worth asking about before it goes in rather than after.
Phosphate remover, if you fought algae this year
Phosphates are algae food. If you had a green pool at any point this season, there is a good chance phosphates are part of why. Removing them before closing means algae has less to work with over the winter and less of a head start at opening. If your season was clean, this one is optional.
Stain and scale inhibitor
Worth adding if your fill water is hard or you have had scale or metal staining before. It sequesters minerals so they stay dissolved rather than depositing on the surface while the water sits still for months. Not every pool needs it; pools with well water or a history of staining usually do.
Chlorine — but the right kind, at the right time
You want a moderate chlorine level going into winter, slightly above your normal in-season target, because it will decay over the months with nothing replenishing it. What you do not want is to shock the pool and cover it the same day. Very high chlorine attacks cover fabric and can bleach vinyl and painted surfaces. Shock earlier in the week if you are going to shock, then let it come down before the cover goes on.
What Not to Put in a Closing Pool
This list prevents more damage than the list above:
- Chlorine tablets in the feeder or a floater. Do not leave tabs anywhere in a closed pool. In a chlorinator, tablets sitting in standing water all winter produce a strongly corrosive acid that destroys the feeder and anything downstream. A floater parks concentrated chlorine against one spot of the surface and the cover, and can bleach or etch a permanent mark.
- Automotive antifreeze. Never. It is toxic, it is a nightmare to flush out in spring, and it does not solve the problem it appears to solve. Cleared and plugged lines are what protect plumbing — not antifreeze poured into them. Pool-specific antifreeze has a narrow, legitimate use in certain lines, but it is not a substitute for blowing the lines out.
- A big dose of everything, just in case. Winterizing kits are sized by pool volume for a reason. Overdosing algaecide foams; overdosing chlorine bleaches the cover; overdosing sequestrant does nothing useful.
- Anything added after the cover is on. If you missed something, you missed it. Pulling a tensioned safety cover back to dose chemicals creates more risk than the dose fixes.
Why Warm Water Ruins Closing Chemistry
The most common closing-chemistry failure in the DMV has nothing to do with which products you bought. It is closing too early.
Algae grows readily above roughly 60°F. Close a pool while the water is still warm and you have created ideal conditions — warm, still, dark, unfiltered water — and the algaecide is doing all the work alone for weeks longer than it was designed to. If You Open to Algae Anyway
Sometimes it happens regardless: a warm November, a cover that let light through, a phosphate load nobody measured.
