How we find your leak

We don’t guess — we diagnose

A systematic, multi-method process locates the exact leak source before we recommend any repair — so you only pay to fix what is actually broken.

Bucket Test (Baseline)

We measure the true rate of water loss and separate evaporation from real leakage, giving us a measurable starting point.

Visual Inspection

We examine plumbing fittings, return jets, skimmers, lights, and the pool shell for cracking, separation, or moisture intrusion.

Pressure Testing

We isolate and pressurize individual plumbing lines to pinpoint pipes that won't hold pressure — without excavation.

Dye Testing

We inject tracer dye at light niches, skimmer throats, return fittings, and cracks, then watch water movement to confirm the source.

Electronic Detection

For buried plumbing, we use electronic listening equipment to detect the sound signature of escaping water underground.

Same-Visit Repairs

Most fitting, skimmer, light-niche, and equipment-pad repairs are completed in the same visit once the leak is located.

Transparent pricing

Leak detection & repair price ranges

Not sure you need full leak detection? A flat $180 service call gets a technician on site to see what's going on — and if it's something minor, we often fix it on the spot. Underground repair pricing depends entirely on the leak location and method — fittings and skimmers cost far less than buried-line repairs requiring excavation. Your written quote is itemized so nothing is a surprise.

Pool Leak Detection FAQs

How do I know if my pool has a leak or if I'm just losing water to evaporation?

The standard field test is the bucket test:

  1. Fill a bucket with pool water and set it on a pool step (so it's in the water).
  2. Mark the water level inside the bucket and on the pool wall.
  3. After 24–48 hours, compare how much each dropped.

If the pool lost more water than the bucket, you have a leak beyond normal evaporation. In summer, pools can lose ¼ to ½ inch per day to evaporation — any loss significantly above that level warrants professional leak detection. Signs that point to a leak include wet spots near the equipment pad, cracks in the shell or fittings, or water loss that persists even when the pump is off.

How much does pool leak detection cost in Virginia or Maryland?

Professional pool leak detection in the DMV starts at $850 for a full diagnostic service, which includes pressure testing the plumbing lines, dye testing at suspected points, and an equipment pad inspection. Not sure you need full detection yet? A flat $180 service call gets a technician on site to assess what's going on — and if the issue is something minor, we often fix it on the spot. If a leak is found, we provide a written repair estimate before any repair work begins. Contact us to schedule a visit.

How long does a pool leak detection service take?

A full pool leak detection typically takes 2 to 4 hours depending on pool size, complexity of the plumbing system, and how many suspect locations need to be tested. Most leaks can be identified and located in a single visit. We provide a written report of findings, including the location and likely cause of any identified leaks, before discussing repair options.

Can you find a pool leak without draining the pool?

Yes — in most cases. Our primary leak detection methods are non-invasive and do not require draining:

  • Pressure testing — we cap and pressurize individual plumbing lines to identify underground pipe leaks without exposing or draining
  • Dye testing — we inject non-toxic dye near suspected leak points (lights, fittings, skimmer, returns) while the pool is full to watch for dye movement indicating a gap
  • Electronic listening — used in some cases to detect vibration from water escaping pressurized lines underground

Draining is only needed if a confirmed structural crack or fitting repair requires access to a dry surface — and we'll tell you that upfront before scheduling any drain-down.

Homeowners Who Trust Beltway Pools for Repairs

Robert Moore coordinates pool cleaning assignments and contracts and does an excellent job of organizing pool cleaning/repair visits. Dragan Kostadinovic is my " go to" man for organizing pool cleanings and making major repairs to our older pool, including underground hose repairs, skimmer replacements, and rebuilding and replacing pumps and valves and filters above ground. He has one particular employee who is an experienced genius in regard to determining the water flow of valves and determining solutions to complex problems. We eventually will ask them to reline the plaster in our pool because I seriously do not TRUST anyone else to do it. I reviewed multiple proposals on rebuilding a pool upon the purchase of our new house. The previous owner had deferred maintenance on literally every aspect of the pool. Our pool required 100% replacement of the filtration system, heater, skimmers and reconstruction of the drainage system, pool floor, tile and coping. Beltway Pools was by far the most responsive of the bidders with the most reasonable and easiest to understand pricing. Anything that I required clarity on they provided. We now are almost a year past the initial work and they did not deviate one penny from their original pricing. They continue to support us with weekly visits (incremental cost but well worth it) for cleaning and chemical balancing. We are very pleased with our service from Beltway Pools. -Andrew T.
