Softer Water, Lower Maintenance

Salt System Conversion & Upgrades

Saltwater pools use natural electrolysis to generate chlorine on-demand — delivering consistently balanced water, softer on skin and eyes, with far less hands-on chemical management than traditional chlorine pools.

How Salt Chlorination Works

Despite the name, a saltwater pool is not a chlorine-free pool. Instead, a salt chlorine generator (SCG) converts dissolved salt into hypochlorous acid — the same sanitizer used in traditional pools — continuously and automatically.

1

Salt is Added

Pool-grade salt is dissolved directly into your pool water. The concentration (typically 2,700–3,400 ppm) is far below what you taste in ocean water.

2

Electrolysis Generates Chlorine

Water passes through the salt cell in your equipment pad. Low-voltage electricity breaks down salt molecules into hypochlorous acid — your pool's sanitizer.

3

Salt is Recycled

After sanitizing, the chlorine converts back to salt and the cycle repeats. You only need to replenish salt to replace what's lost to backwashing and splash-out.

Saltwater vs Traditional Chlorine

Most pool owners who convert never look back. Here’s an honest side-by-side comparison.

FactorSalt SystemTraditional Chlorine
Water Feel✓ Soft and silkyCan feel harsh and drying
Eye & Skin Irritation✓ Significantly reducedCommon with high chloramine levels
Chlorine Consistency✓ Continuous, auto-regulatedManual dosing; can spike or crash
Ongoing Chemical Cost✓ Lower (mainly salt top-ups)Regular chlorine, shock, and stabilizer purchases
Upfront Equipment CostHigher ($800–$2,000+ installed)✓ Lower
Cell ReplacementSalt cell every 4–7 years (~$300–$700)No cell to replace
Maintenance Hands-On✓ Less frequent manual dosingMore frequent manual chemical additions

What’s Included in a Salt System Conversion

Most conversions are completed in a single visit. Here’s what our technicians handle from start to finish.

Equipment Assessment

We verify your existing pump, filter, and heater are compatible with salt chlorination. Some equipment (particularly copper heat exchangers) requires corrosion protection or replacement.

Salt Chlorine Generator Installation

We install the SCG cell inline on your return plumbing, connect the control unit to your equipment pad, and configure output levels for your pool volume.

Salt Addition & Balancing

We calculate exactly how much salt your pool requires, add it correctly, and confirm dissolution. We also adjust pH, alkalinity, and stabilizer for salt system compatibility.

Automation Integration

If you have an existing automation system, we integrate the salt controller so you can manage salt output alongside pump speed, temperature, and lighting — all from one interface.

Owner Walkthrough

Before we leave, we walk you through how to read cell output, when to inspect the cell, and what annual maintenance looks like for a saltwater pool.

Ongoing Cell Maintenance

Salt cells accumulate calcium scale over time and need periodic cleaning. We offer cell inspection and cleaning as part of regular maintenance visits.

Typical Conversion Cost (DMV Area)

Entry-level salt system (supply + install)

$800 – $1,400

Mid-range system with digital control

$1,400 – $2,200

Premium system with automation integration

$2,200 – $3,500

Final cost depends on pool volume, brand selected, and any compatibility upgrades required. Plumbing modifications, if needed, are quoted separately.

Salt Systems We Install

We install and program all major saltwater chlorination brands. Our technicians select the right system for your pool volume, existing equipment, and budget.

Most Popular Choice

Hayward AquaRite

The most widely installed salt system in the DMV. Reliable, well-supported, with cells available in multiple output sizes (15k – 40k gallon ratings). Compatible with most Hayward automation.

Premium Integration

Pentair IntelliChlor

Integrates seamlessly with Pentair IntelliCenter and IntelliConnect automation. Diagnostic-level feedback through the automation app — salt level, cell status, and chlorine output at a glance.

High Value & Power

CircuPool Universal

Higher chlorine output per dollar than most name-brand systems. A strong choice for larger pools or homeowners who want maximum output without premium brand pricing.

Saltwater Pool Conversion — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to convert a chlorine pool to saltwater in the DMV?

A saltwater system conversion in the Northern Virginia / Maryland area typically costs $1,500–$3,500 installed, depending on the salt chlorine generator model, whether any plumbing modifications are needed, and the salt required to bring your pool to the correct salinity level (approximately 3,200 ppm). Premium systems with higher cell capacity or automation integration fall toward the higher end of that range. Contact us for a site-specific quote.

Will switching to saltwater damage my existing pool surfaces or equipment?

When properly maintained, a saltwater system is not harmful to your pool surfaces, equipment, or deck materials. Pool water salinity is set to approximately 3,200 ppm — far below ocean water (~35,000 ppm) and only slightly higher than human tears. The risk of damage comes from neglecting salt levels, not from the system itself.

Some older or lower-quality fixtures — certain lights, heaters, and metal ladders — may show accelerated oxidation over time if water chemistry is not kept in balance. We assess your existing equipment compatibility during the consultation and recommend any protective measures needed.

How long does a saltwater pool conversion take?

Most saltwater conversions are completed in a single day. The installation involves plumbing the salt chlorine generator cell into the filtration return line, mounting the control unit, wiring to your electrical panel, and adding the initial salt charge. Balancing the water chemistry takes a few days after installation as the system reaches equilibrium. We perform a follow-up water test to confirm levels are correct before signing off.

Does a saltwater pool still require chemicals?

Yes — a saltwater pool still requires chemical management, just less manual chlorine dosing. The salt cell produces chlorine continuously from dissolved salt, but you still need to monitor and adjust:

  • pH — salt systems tend to push pH upward; muriatic acid additions are common
  • Alkalinity — keeps pH stable
  • Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) — protects chlorine from UV degradation
  • Calcium hardness — protects surface and equipment
  • Salt level — topped off annually as water is lost

Most saltwater pool owners find total chemical spending is reduced by 50–70% vs. manual chlorination, and the water feels noticeably softer and less irritating.
