Pool Heater Types Compared

The right heater depends on how you use your pool, your fuel source, and your budget. We service and install all three types.

Gas Heater

Best for: Fastest heat-up time

Advantages

  • Heats pool in hours, not days
  • Works regardless of outside temperature
  • Lower upfront cost
  • Ideal for occasional or seasonal use

Considerations

  • Higher operating cost per BTU
  • Requires natural gas or propane line

Typical installed cost

$1,500 – $3,500 installed

Heat Pump

Best for: Lowest operating cost

Advantages

  • Uses ambient air heat — 5× more efficient than gas
  • Lower monthly energy cost
  • Ideal for daily use in swim season
  • Long lifespan (10–15 years)

Considerations

  • Slower heat-up time
  • Less effective below 50°F air temperature

Typical installed cost

$2,500 – $5,000 installed

Solar Heater

Best for: Zero operating cost

Advantages

  • Free energy from the sun
  • Very low maintenance
  • No operating cost after installation
  • Extends swim season naturally

Considerations

  • Slower heating; weather-dependent
  • Requires adequate roof or ground space

Typical installed cost

$3,000 – $6,000 installed

Estimates reflect DMV-area market rates for residential pools. Final cost depends on BTU rating, plumbing work required, and permit fees for your jurisdiction.

Common Pool Heater Problems We Fix

Most heater failures come down to a handful of root causes. Our technicians carry common parts and can resolve most issues in a single visit.

Ignition Failure

Gas heaters that click but won't fire often have a faulty igniter, thermocouple, or gas valve. We diagnose and replace the specific component — not the entire unit.

Error Codes & Control Board Issues

Modern heaters display specific fault codes. Our technicians are trained across all major brands and interpret error codes to identify the precise failure point.

Refrigerant Issues (Heat Pumps)

Heat pumps that run but don't transfer heat often have refrigerant leaks or compressor problems. We perform refrigerant diagnostics and work with licensed HVAC-certified technicians for refrigerant service.

Heat Exchanger Corrosion

Improper water chemistry accelerates heat exchanger corrosion. We assess exchanger condition and advise on repair vs. replacement — and review your water chemistry to prevent recurrence.

Pressure Switch & Flow Sensor Failures

Heaters that won't fire despite everything else working often have a failed pressure switch or flow sensor — inexpensive parts that our technicians can typically replace same-day.

Pilot Light & Gas Pressure Problems

Low gas pressure or a dirty pilot assembly prevents consistent ignition. We test gas pressure at the heater, clean or replace pilots, and coordinate with your gas utility when needed.

Our Heater Service Process

1

Diagnose

We test gas pressure, check flow rates, inspect electrical connections, and read fault codes to pinpoint the root cause — not just the symptom.

2

Quote & Approve

You receive a clear written quote before any repair work begins. We explain the options and let you decide — no pressure, no surprises.

3

Repair or Install

We complete the work, test the heater through a full heat cycle, and confirm proper operation before signing off. All work is documented.

What Our Customers Say

Trusted by homeowners across Virginia, Maryland, and DC.

Robert Moore coordinates pool cleaning assignments and contracts and does an excellent job of organizing pool cleaning/repair visits. Dragan Kostadinovic is my " go to" man for organizing pool cleanings and making major repairs to our older pool, including underground hose repairs, skimmer replacements, and rebuilding and replacing pumps and valves and filters above ground. He has one particular employee who is an experienced genius in regard to determining the water flow of valves and determining solutions to complex problems. We eventually will ask them to reline the plaster in our pool because I seriously do not TRUST anyone else to do it. I reviewed multiple proposals on rebuilding a pool upon the purchase of our new house. The previous owner had deferred maintenance on literally every aspect of the pool. Our pool required 100% replacement of the filtration system, heater, skimmers and reconstruction of the drainage system, pool floor, tile and coping. Beltway Pools was by far the most responsive of the bidders with the most reasonable and easiest to understand pricing. Anything that I required clarity on they provided. We now are almost a year past the initial work and they did not deviate one penny from their original pricing. They continue to support us with weekly visits (incremental cost but well worth it) for cleaning and chemical balancing. We are very pleased with our service from Beltway Pools. -Andrew T. Pool Heater Repair — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does pool heater repair cost in Virginia or Maryland?

Pool heater repair costs in the DMV vary by heater type and the nature of the failure:

  • Minor repairs (igniter, thermocouple, pressure switch) — $150–$400
  • Control board or gas valve replacement — $500 – $1,200+
  • Heat exchanger replacement — $800–$1,800
  • Full gas heater replacement (supply + install) — $1,500–$3,500
  • Heat pump replacement (supply + install) — $2,500–$5,000

We diagnose root causes before recommending repair or replacement — and we won't recommend a new unit when a part repair will solve the problem. Contact us for a written estimate.

How long does it take to repair or replace a pool heater?

Most heater repairs are completed in a single visit of 1 to 3 hours, provided the needed parts are in stock or on our truck. Full heater replacements typically take 3 to 5 hours depending on the unit size, whether new gas line modifications are needed, and permit requirements for your jurisdiction. Gas line work may require a separate permit inspection, which can add a day or two to the timeline.

Which pool heater type is most efficient for the DMV climate?

For the Northern Virginia / Maryland climate, heat pumps are the most energy-efficient choice for everyday swim-season use. They use ambient air heat and deliver roughly 5 BTUs of heat per BTU of electricity consumed. However, they slow down when outside temperatures drop below 50°F — which limits their effectiveness in early spring and late fall in the DMV.

Gas heaters excel when you want rapid heat-up (ideal for weekend warriors or occasional users) and reliable performance regardless of outdoor temperature.

Many homeowners opt for a gas heater + pool cover combination — the cover retains heat overnight and the gas heater provides fast warmth when needed. We'll recommend the best fit for how you actually use your pool during your consultation.

My pool heater shows an error code — what does that mean?

Modern pool heaters display manufacturer-specific error codes that point to the fault location. Common codes indicate issues with:

  • Flow/pressure switch — heater isn't detecting adequate water flow
  • Ignition failure — gas valve, igniter, or thermocouple issue
  • High-limit switch trip — overheating due to restricted flow or a failing sensor
  • Refrigerant / compressor fault (heat pumps) — refrigerant issue or compressor failure

Our technicians are trained across all major heater brands and decode error codes as part of every diagnostic visit — we identify the root cause, not just the symptom. Schedule a visit for a written diagnosis.
